Featured in the ever-loved Notting Hill, Kenwood House is a beautiful stately home built on the northern boundary of Hampstead Heath. But it’s not just pretty to look at – Kenwood’s true beauty lies within.
Scottish architect Robert Adam remodelled the house between 1764 and 1769. His skill lives on to be admired. The Great Hall and library are both architectural masterpieces now open to the public. Kenwood also hosts many great works of art such as Rembrandt’s self-portrait, ‘A Portrait of the Artist’.
More recently the house was featured in the film Belle which is about a mixed-race girl who lived at Kenwood in the eighteenth century. Although it was actually filmed in other locations, watching the film before you go will give you a feel of the history of the house.
For kids, Mac Kenwood’s trail is a great way to discover secrets about Kenwood’s house and estate. The gardens are perfect for picnics in summer. Kids can enjoy scootering around the grounds and rolling down the hill. If you want to explore the surrounding woods bring wellies whatever the weather and prepare to get muddy.
Kenwood is a perfect place to walk the dogs, but look out for signs in places where dogs are not welcome.

I love this little slice of the country side. Kenwood House and the land surrounding it really makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. I come here with friends to live out our Pride and Prejuduce fantasies. I also loved visiting Kenwood House after finding out it was featured on the silver screen – and I can see why. The architecture is beautiful and if I had a dog, I would be here regularly for some good walks.

I worked here many years ago, it truly is one of London’s hidden gems, and it’s free! I can’t wait to bring my kids here, there are endless ways to enjoy it, from staring at the library ceiling to running in the gardens.
Had a wonderful muddy adventure up a Kenwood with the kids. They just loved running around and exploring in all that open space. Top day out finishing with a hot chocolate and a slice of cake at the cafe – perfect!
The art is beautiful and the recent renovations are fantastic. Love going for tea and a walk with the kids too. The grounds are a great place to bring scooters!
Can’t argue with free! Summer here we come.
