The Golden Hinde, first called the Pelican, was the ship used by Sir Francis Drake to circumnavigate the Globe. Unfortunately, the real ship is no longer around, but this fantastic replica is the next best thing.
Situated on Bankside not far from London Bridge, the Golden Hinde is perfect for kids who dream of being pirates. Sir Francis Drake, was among other things, a privateer, which is essentially a pirate who gets away with doing pirate-y stuff because Queen Elizabeth I liked him.
Onboard, you can take a guided tour where you will learn a great deal about pirates and Tudors. Costumed actors will take you around the boat and there is even a chance for kids to participate in firing the guns and even raising the anchor.
A variety of events take place throughout the year from shadow puppet theatre performances to storytelling. And this unique venue is available for children’s birthday parties too, perfect for any young budding pirates!
The Clink Prison Museum, Shakespeare’s Globe, Borough Market and Tate Modern are all just a short walk away. There are plenty of family restaurants in the area.

A great day out for history lovers. I had a great time exploring the history of this ship that I previously hadn’t heard of. If you’re not too into history, I’m sure anyone with a healthy one of Pirates of The Caribbean would also enjoy this experience. Sometimes the experience was a little bit young but that was easy to tune out and focus on the history. Although, if you’re a kid at heart then get involved!
