About BFI IMAX

If your kids think your TV is big, wait until they see the BFI IMAX. Home to the largest cinema screen in the UK, this London legend dishes up blockbuster films, booming surround sound, and an experience that makes your sofa setup look like a toy.

Located just next to Waterloo Station, the BFI IMAX shows everything from Disney favourites and Marvel movies to nature documentaries that’ll blow your mind. It’s a great shout for tweens, teens, and anyone who loves cinema turned up to 11.The screen is massive, but the vibe is surprisingly family-friendly. There are booster seats for little ones, accessible screenings, and discounted tickets for families, students and BFI Members. Hungry? The snack stand has popcorn, nachos, sweets, vegan options and slushies, just no picnics, sorry.

Top tip from the KidRated team:

Sit in Rows K–M for the best view. And if you’ve got little ones, avoid the front row unless they really want to meet Godzilla up close. And pair your trip with a stroll along Southbank or a spin on the London Eye for a full-on day out.

Do we need to book tickets in advance?

Yes. Book online to avoid disappointment, especially for big releases. IMAX shows often sell out and no one wants a meltdown at the box office.

Are there family ticket deals or discounts?

Yes, look out for family combos, student prices, and deals for BFI Members (extra perks and cheaper snacks included!).

What is the BFI IMAX and why should we take the kids?

It’s the biggest cinema screen in the UK – over 20 metres high – with booming surround sound and jaw-dropping visuals. From Disney classics to Marvel epics and epic nature docs, it’s the perfect way to wow the whole family.

Is the BFI IMAX suitable for younger kids?

Definitely. There are loads of family-friendly films and animated favourites on rotation. Just avoid the front row unless your child really wants to inspect a superhero’s nostrils.

Are there accessible screenings for families with additional needs?

Absolutely. Expect step-free access, subtitled screenings, audio description, booster seats, and baby-changing facilities – thoughtful touches that make a big difference.

What’s the best seat at the BFI IMAX for families?

Aim for Rows K–M – they’re the sweet spot for big-screen action. Booster seats are available, and Row N+ offers great views if your child prefers sitting a bit further back.

Is every film in 3D at the BFI IMAX?

Nope, and that’s not a bad thing! Some blockbusters are in IMAX 3D (glasses needed), but many are shown in stunning standard IMAX without the eyewear. Either way, it’s massive.

Can we bring our own snacks?

Nope. Outside food isn’t allowed. But there’s a solid selection of cinema classics – popcorn, hot dogs, nachos, vegan options and slushies. Sweet tooth? You’re covered.

Where is the BFI IMAX and how do we get there?

It’s right next to Waterloo Station.. Super easy by tube, train or bus. Driving? Try the National Theatre or Waterloo car parks nearby.

Can we make a full family day out near the BFI IMAX?

Yes. You’re right by the South Bank. Combine your film trip with a ride on the London Eye, a visit to SEA LIFE, some ogre laughs at Shrek’s Adventure or the London Dungeon if you have teens in tow. Plenty of food spots nearby too.
