It's a train! A really fast train! I think there's a level of excitement that kind of tops off after a bit for kids. The trip idea is exciting and going through the tunnel is neat, but at the end of the day, it is a long train ride. Take snacks (that you will consume or are allowed on the continent). Pay attention when booking, you may buy tickets that face backwards.

St Pancras is a beautifully designed station so do take some time to go to the top floor and breath in the atmosphere! Can get very busy though so leave enough time!

About Eurostar

All aboard! If you’re planning a family getaway to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, or just fancy zipping under the Channel for a long weekend, Eurostar is your golden ticket. Departing from London St Pancras, this high-speed train whisks you to the heart of Europe in under 2.5 hours. No faffing with airports, no baggage claim dramas, and no crying over confiscated Calpol at security.

For families, it’s a game-changer. Kids love the space to move around, parents love the comfy seats and stress-free boarding, and everyone loves arriving right in the middle of town. There’s free WiFi, plug sockets at every seat, and snacks on board if you forget the sandwiches (we’ve all been there). Plus, under-4s travel free on a grown-up’s lap, and there are discounts for kids up to age 11.

Top tip from the KidRated team:

Bring games, snacks and something to colour.

Is Eurostar family-friendly?

Totally. It’s one of the smoothest ways to take kids abroad. Toddlers love the adventure, school-age kids enjoy the novelty, and teens can stretch out, snack, scroll (when the signal allows), and pretend they’re not with you.

Do children get a discount?

Yes. Under 4s travel free if they sit on your lap. Kids aged 4–11 get a discounted fare. From 12 up, it’s full price, but they get the full legroom too.

Can you take a buggy or pushchair?

Yes. Bring it onboard for free. No faffing with check-in, just fold it and stash it in the luggage rack when you’re sorted.

Do kids need a passport to travel on Eurostar?

Yes. Post-Brexit, every traveller – including babies – needs their own passport. Get everything sorted before you head to the station to avoid any last-minute panic stations.

Are there family seats on board?

Yes. When booking, try to grab one of the four-seat booths with a table. Great for Uno battles, sticker books, or a well-timed pain au chocolat picnic.

Can you bring your own food on Eurostar?

Absolutely. There’s a buffet car, but bringing your own snacks is always a good idea, especially if someone only eats beige food or gets hangry mid-tunnel.

Are there toilets and baby-changing facilities?

Yes. Multiple loos and baby-changing spots across the train. No need to worry about nappy changes at 200mph, they’ve got you covered.

What’s the best time to travel with kids on Eurostar?

Mid-morning or early afternoon tends to be quieter. Avoid peak commuting hours if possible. And book early to nab seats together!

Do we go through passport control and security?

Yes, but it’s quick and family-friendly. You’ll go through UK exit checks and French border control before boarding. Just allow 45–60 minutes to get through at St Pancras.

Where should we go on Eurostar with kids?

Disneyland Paris: Direct trains at peak times. Magical from the moment you board.
Brussels: Chocolate, waffles, Tintin—need we say more?
Amsterdam: Cool canals and even cooler teen vibes.
Paris: Croissants, carousels, and selfie spots galore.
