About Foundling Museum

The Foundling Museum is one of London’s hidden gems – and it’s perfect for curious kids and grown-ups who love a good story. Just a few minutes from King’s Cross, this family-friendly museum tells the moving tale of Britain’s first children’s charity and public art gallery. You’ll learn how 18th-century babies were given new lives, how famous artists and musicians pitched in to help, and how a simple token could mean everything.

But it’s not all serious – there are dress-up corners, hands-on exhibits, sensory trails, and activity packs to keep younger visitors engaged. Special family days during holidays include storytelling, art workshops and music sessions. It’s surprisingly interactive, bite-sized enough for little attention spans, and just across the road from Coram’s Fields, one of London’s best playgrounds.

Top tip from the KidRated team:

Combine a visit here with lunch outside or a run around Coram’s Fields next door.

Is the Foundling Museum family-friendly?

Surprisingly, yes. It’s full of fascinating stories, gorgeous art and just enough hands-on stuff to keep the whole crew happy, even the ones who normally pretend museums are boring. You might arrive with low expectations and leave with high praise from the kids.

What age is it best for?

Kids aged 7 and up will get the most out of it, especially if they’re into stories or art. But with trails and crafty activities on offer, younger siblings won’t be left out either.

Are there hands-on things for kids to do?

Loads. Pick up a family trail at the front desk and keep an eye out for weekend workshops and school holiday sessions. From painting to sticking and storytelling, there’s always something to get stuck into.

Do kids get in free?

Yes. Anyone under 21 or with a student card gets in for free. Adults need a ticket, but it’s still a bargain day out, especially with all the creative extras.

Do you need to book in advance?

You can just rock up, but it’s smart to book ahead during holidays or weekends. That way you can skip the queues and avoid any “why didn’t you check?” moments.

Is it buggy friendly?

Yes. Lifts, step-free access and wide gallery spaces mean no awkward corner-turning or backtracking required. Pushchairs welcome.

Are there baby-changing facilities?

Yes. Clean, easy-to-find loos with changing areas so you can manage nappy missions without drama.

Is there a café?

Yes. The on-site café is cosy, calm and cake filled. Perfect for a snack stop or quiet moment after all the exploring.

Is it good for school projects?

Very. Whether it’s about Georgian London, foster care, art or music, kids leave with more than enough facts to impress their teacher and maybe even ask to go back.

What else is nearby?

Coram’s Fields is literally next door. It’s a brilliant, car-free park with a giant playground and farm animals. Ideal for burning off post-museum energy while grown-ups grab a coffee.
