About Golden Hinde
All aboard for one of London’s most swashbuckling family adventures! The Golden Hinde, moored near London Bridge, is a life-size reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake’s legendary 16th-century ship—the first English vessel to sail around the world. This isn’t a “look, don’t touch” museum. Kids can climb into tiny sailor bunks, spin the ship’s wheel, and discover what life was really like on the high seas (spoiler: it wasn’t all parrots and gold).
With interactive Crew Tours, costumed guides, cannon drills, and pirate-themed events, the Golden Hinde is a hands-on hit for kids aged 5+ and their grown-ups. It’s educational, engaging, and just the right level of chaotic fun. Best of all, it’s brilliantly placed for a day out on the South Bank, just a short walk from Borough Market and the Thames Path.
Top tip from the KidRated team:
Fancy dress is welcome, so bring your best pirate voice. And if you’re visiting during holidays, book ahead—those family events get snapped up faster than buried treasure.
It’s brilliant for ages 5+ who love pirates, history, or just climbing around cool old ships.
Yes. You can explore with a self-guided audio tour or join a “Crew Tour” led by costumed characters. Expect cannon drills, sea shanties, and loads of interactive fun.
Absolutely. Fancy dress is encouraged and totally adds to the fun – eye patches and ‘Arrrghs’ welcome.
Sadly not. The ship has steep, narrow stairs and low ceilings, it’s part of the charm but tricky for wheels or mobility issues.
Yes. The Golden Hinde is an amazing birthday venue, with party packages that include treasure hunts, pirate games, and exclusive use of parts of the ship.
Loads. From “Escape the Golden Hinde” to Pirate Training and storytelling sessions, check their website for what’s on.
Yes, especially if they’re into history, roleplay, or Instagrammable pirate aesthetics. It’s immersive and refreshingly different.
Definitely. You’ll find tons of historical context onboard, plus downloadable learning resources online, perfect for school projects or curious minds.
