About Hackney City Farm
Want to meet a pig, pet a goat and munch on homemade cake, all without leaving Zone 2? Hackney City Farm in Haggerston is your answer. Tucked beside Haggerston Park, this proper working farm has been delighting London families since 1984, offering a rare chance for kids to get muddy, mucky, and hands-on with real animals.
You’ll find friendly donkeys, curious chickens, pigs snuffling for snacks, and some very photogenic goats. There’s also a vegetable garden, herb beds and buzzing bee hives to explore. Weekend workshops and Mini Farmers’ Clubs (for ages 8–12) are perfect for crafty, outdoorsy kids who love getting stuck in.
It’s totally free, super accessible, and has a cracking on-site café called Frizzante, ideal for coffee, cake or brunch after a hard morning of goat-gazing. Whether you’ve got toddlers who just want to stare at ducks, or teens who reckon they could run a farm better, there’s something for everyone.
Top tip from the KidRated team:
Bring snacks, wipes and maybe some wellies, this is the countryside, Hackney-style.
Goats, pigs, donkeys, sheep, ducks, chickens, geese, rabbits and even bees! Spring is baby animal season, so get your “awwws” ready.
From toddlers to tweens, it’s a top spot for meeting animals, helping in the gardens, and joining hands-on workshops or Mini Farmers’ Clubs.
Yes. On weekends you’ll find pottery, woodworking, gardening sessions, and more. Mini (8–12) and Maxi (12–18) Farmers’ Clubs are especially fun.
Yep. There’s step-free access, ramps, accessible loos, and baby-changing facilities. The cobbles add charm, not chaos.
Yes, the Frizzante Café serves up brunch, juices, cakes and occasional evening meals. Or bring a picnic and eat in the garden or park next door.
Definitely. The Straw Bale Room is available to hire for DIY-style parties. Bring your own food, music, and vibes (just no glitter!).
1–2 hours is great for animal spotting and a snack. Add a workshop or lunch and you’ve got a half-day sorted.
Yes, but spots are limited. Apply early for placements in animal care, gardening or sustainability.
