I think Matilda and Lion King are the 2 BEST SHOWS EVER. I love this show. The actors are fab! And there's a really cool surprise trick that you just cant work out how they do it. It's ace!

About Matilda the Musical

Matilda isn’t just a story about a bookish girl with magical powers, it’s a defiant, dazzling celebration of clever kids standing up to grown-up bullies. This award-winning musical by Tim Minchin brings Roald Dahl’s classic tale to technicolour life with amazing staging, brilliantly witty songs, and a cast of astonishingly talented kids. There’s heart, humour and a bit of havoc – plus a villain (Miss Trunchbull) who’s deliciously terrifying in the best pantomime style. Whether your child has read the book, seen the film or is new to Matilda altogether, this is one of those shows that sticks with them and leaves grown-ups grinning too.

Is Matilda suitable for young children?

It’s a big yes for confident school-age kids (7+). Miss Trunchbull can be quite scary, so we wouldn’t recommend it for nervous under-6s. But most kids love the chaos and the catchy tunes.

What age group is this best for?

Ages 7–14 will adore it. Teens and adults who love clever wordplay and a bit of bite will have a great time too.

How scary is it?

Trunchbull’s got a mean streak, but it’s all in good theatrical fun. If your kids can handle a bit of pantomime peril, they’ll be fine.

How long is the show?

2 hours 40 minutes, with one interval. Feels quick – especially when the kids on stage are delivering such jaw-dropping performances.

Where is the theatre and what’s nearby?

Cambridge Theatre in Seven Dials – bang in the middle of Covent Garden. Perfect for a pre-show meal at Dishoom, Homeslice or the nearby Market Hall.

Is the seating comfortable for kids and grandparents?

Yes, and booster cushions are often available for smaller kids. Book early for central seats – sightlines matter for this one!

What if my kid is new to Matilda?

No problem, the show’s strong enough to stand on its own. But watching the movie or reading a chapter or two can help younger ones connect more easily.

What’s the vibe – chill or fancy?

Very relaxed – you’ll see everything from sparkly tutus to school uniform. Just no Trunchbull cosplay unless you’re really brave…
