About the Old Royal Naval College

The Old Royal Naval College is one of those London gems that makes you go “Wow” as soon as you arrive. Think domes, towers, riverside views and ceilings so epic they’ve starred in Bridgerton, Pirates of the Caribbean and Les Mis. Kids can roam the massive lawns, try on naval uniforms, and discover secret corners of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Inside the Painted Hall, the jaw-dropping artwork will impress even the most reluctant museum-goer – and the multimedia guide makes it super engaging. Families can follow special trails, uncover hidden tunnels, and pretend they’re on a film set (because they probably are).

It’s fully accessible, buggy-friendly, and a dream for grandparents who appreciate a bit of architecture and a good sit-down with a cuppa. Add in a family-friendly café, a brilliant gift shop, and Greenwich Market just minutes away, and you’ve got the perfect day out.

Top tip from the KidRated Team:

Play “Spot the Movie” – grab a list of films and shows shot here and let the kids (or grandparents!) match the scenes to real life. It’s basically  sightseeing meets trivia quiz.

Is it fun for kids?

Absolutely. There’s dress-up, interactive guides, family trails, and loads of open space for running wild, playing pirates, or picnicking with teddies.

What’s the Painted Hall and will my kids like it?

It’s like Greenwich’s Sistine Chapel – stunning ceiling art telling stories of kings, queens, and sailors. Kids love spotting the weird details (like flying babies and sea monsters).

Is it good for teens?

Yes, especially if they’re into architecture, photography or period dramas. It’s also a top Insta spot, and teens might recognise it from TV and films.

What age group is it best for?

Kids aged 5 and up get the most from the trails and exhibitions, but little ones will still enjoy the space, dressing up and sheer scale of the buildings.

Do we need to book ahead?

Not essential, but booking tickets online is usually cheaper and quicker, especially during weekends or holidays.

How long should we spend here?

Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours, longer if you’re combining it with the Painted Hall, lunch, or nearby attractions.

Is it accessible for buggies and wheelchairs?

Yes, the whole site is fully accessible, with ramps, lifts and friendly staff. There are also baby change facilities and quiet zones.

Where can we eat nearby?

There’s a café on site, plus plenty of options at Greenwich Market – including child-friendly restaurants and riverside pubs with outdoor seating.

Can we bring grandparents?

Please do, they’ll love the history, stories, and scenery. It’s easy to get around and full of places to sit, rest, and take it all in.

What else is nearby?

You’re spoiled! Check out the Cutty Sark, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich Park, and the Royal Observatory – all just minutes away on foot.
