About Starlight Express
Back in London with a souped-up new look, Starlight Express is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical where trains race, hearts break, and performers zoom around you on roller skates. Set in a purpose-built arena, the cast skate, swirl and soar right past your seat. The story – about Rusty, a sweet underdog steam engine trying to find his confidence – is touching, but it’s the jaw-dropping visuals, thumping soundtrack and tech-filled set that really steal the show. Perfect for kids who love movement, energy, and a hint of 80s retro magic, and for grandparents who enjoy a theatre trip with a twist.
Ages 6 to 14 are the sweet spot. Teens may enjoy the immersive atmosphere and retro coolness. Grandparents will love the nostalgia and showmanship.
Yes, it’s great for kids aged 6 and up. They’ll be wowed by the lights, the speed, and the roller-skating magic. Tiny tots might find it a bit too loud and fast-paced, but primary school kids will be fully engaged.
Not scary – just very energetic and dramatic in places. There’s a cartoony vibe that keeps everything fun and safe-feeling. No jump scares or dark themes to worry about.
The show runs about 2 hours 15 minutes, including an interval. Some moments are loud and fast-paced – ideal for thrill-loving kids and teens, but bring ear defenders for younger, more sensitive children.
Definitely. The storyline is clear and simple: Rusty wants to win the race and prove himself. It’s like a mix of a cartoon and a talent show, with a lot of skating flair thrown in.
The races, hands down. Kids will love watching the cast whizzing around at high speed – it feels more like a live-action video game than a play.
Yes, loads of family-friendly food options nearby – pizza places, burger joints, and snack bars galore. You won’t struggle to find something everyone will eat.
Absolutely! Birthdays, end-of-term treats, or just an excuse for a wow-factor day out. It’s loud, proud and packed with fun.
Most productions are centrally located, so you’re not far from Covent Garden, Hamleys, the Transport Museum, or even a cheeky M&M World visit.

A hugely entertaining show for kids — big and small. The plot is simple but the brilliant costume design, pyro, video effects and the theatre split into sections around the race track are not. For the parents, it’s all very 80’s, with a very modern twist. The girls absolutely loved it and roller-skated home, and sang “My Starlight Express, please answer me yes’… at the top of their voices for days afterwards. For noise sensitive kids consider taking ear protectors — it is really loud, because of the set design. And for hungry kids, there’s a couple of bars with great drink choices but they’re really light on snacks, so eat first at the Box Park opposite (or bring favorites with you). A summer must see!
