About Westminster Abbey

If you’ve ever wanted to walk in the footsteps of kings, queens, and about a million school trips – Westminster Abbey is the place. It’s basically Britain’s ultimate history book, but with actual tombs, towering stained glass, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you whisper even when no one tells you to. Yes, it’s old. Yes, it’s fancy. But trust us – kids will be impressed. There’s a real-life Coronation Chair (the one King Charles sat on), a royal tomb treasure hunt, and even the grave of Isaac Newton and Stephen Hawking – which means you can tick off history AND science in one go. Multitasking! The multimedia guides are great for families, and there’s even a kids’ trail to stop little ones from just asking, “Who’s that?” every three seconds. Bonus points if your child pretends to be a royal ghost (ours did). Perfect for tweens and older kids who can handle a bit of walking and whispering. And yes, there’s a café for essential cake rewards afterwards.

Top tip from the KidRated Team:

Pick up the family multimedia guide at the entrance – it makes everything way more fun (and stops you having to guess who all the statues are).

What age is it best for?

It’s great for tweens and teens, especially if they’ve started learning about monarchs or British history at school. Younger children will enjoy the grandeur but may not last the whole visit unless you pace it well with snacks and silliness.

Is there a family trail or kids’ guide?

Yes, they offer family-friendly multimedia guides, which include a kids’ trail. It helps turn the visit into a bit of a treasure hunt and keeps younger minds engaged.

How much is it?

It’s not free (it’s a royal hotspot, after all), but under-5s go free and family tickets are available. Book online to save time (and possibly your sanity).

What’s with the Coronation Chair?

It’s THE chair used for every coronation since 1308 – yes, 1308. It’s battered, it’s ancient, and it’s super cool once you realise it’s older than your great-great-great nan.

Can we see where famous people are buried?

Oh yes – everyone from Charles Dickens to Elizabeth I is here. It’s a bit like celebrity spotting, but way more historical (and slightly more respectful).

How long does it take?

Around 90 minutes to 2 hours for a full wander – longer if your child wants to quiz you on every single tombstone. (Bring snacks.)

Is it indoors? Good for rainy days?

100%. It’s massive, dry, and will keep them exploring for ages. Bring a coat for the cloisters though – those bits are chilly.

Is there a gift shop?

Oh yes. With crowns, coronation mugs, and many things covered in gold. Budget accordingly.

What’s close by to visit afterwards?

Loads! You’re right next to Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, and St James’s Park – ideal for a runaround if the kids need to let off steam. You can also stroll across Westminster Bridge for epic London Eye views.
