About Wicked

What’s the story of Wicked?
Before Dorothy and her little dog showed up in Oz, there was Elphaba – misunderstood, green-skinned, and anything but wicked. Wicked tells the story behind the story, bringing us a bold and brilliant tale of friendship, difference, and destiny. The production is lavish, the effects are magical (yes, there’s flying), and the soundtrack – especially “Defying Gravity” – will be echoing in your home for weeks. It’s a perfect pick for tweens and teens who love a good story, big emotions, and a message of empowerment.

Is it suitable for kids?

It’s great for ages 7 and up, but we’d recommend it especially for tweens and teens (9–16). Younger kids might struggle with the longer runtime or more emotional scenes.

Is it scary or sad?

Not really scary, though there are some tense moments with dramatic lighting and effects. It’s more emotionally rich than frightening. The story deals with friendship, prejudice and finding your voice.

What age group is it best for?

Tweens and teens will love it, but it’s also great for adults. Families with mixed-age kids will find it hits the sweet spot for everyone.

Is Wicked hard to follow?

Not at all, especially for kids familiar with The Wizard of Oz and the Wicked movie. But even if they aren’t, the story is told clearly, and the themes of friendship and being true to yourself are universal.

How long is Wicked?

It’s about 2 hours 45 minutes with an interval. Bring snacks, or grab something sweet at the bar before it starts.

Is the venue easy to get to?

Very. The Apollo Victoria Theatre is right next to Victoria Station – super accessible by train, tube or bus.

Is Wicked too girly for boys?

Not at all, it’s full of magic, strong messages, drama and humour. It’s empowering rather than gender-specific, and lots of boys really enjoy the story and spectacle.

Is there food nearby?

Tons! From classic chains to fancy restaurants, plus Victoria has great grab-and-go options for a post-show treat. You won’t go hungry.

What else is nearby for a full day out?

You’re within walking distance of Buckingham Palace, St James’s Park, and the revamped Battersea Power Station. Make a day of it!
