About Sparks Film School
Sparks Film School is where kids and teens stop just watching films and start making them. From writing scripts and acting in scenes to learning camera tricks, editing, sound design and special effects, this is proper hands-on filmmaking for young creators aged 5–18.
Whether your child dreams of directing the next blockbuster, becoming a YouTuber, making animations, or just needs a creative outlet away from endless scrolling, Sparks is brilliant at building confidence without it feeling remotely “school-ish”. The vibe is collaborative, encouraging and surprisingly professional – kids work in small film crews using real equipment, then proudly premiere their finished films at the end.
There are weekly classes, holiday camps and special themed “Summer Shoots” where young filmmakers dive into ambitious projects inspired by genres like mystery, action, comedy and sci-fi
Top tip from the KidRated Team:
If your child is even vaguely obsessed with YouTube, TikTok, Minecraft storytelling, Marvel films or making little videos on your phone… this is their happy place. And yes, they’ll probably start critiquing camera angles in Netflix shows afterwards.
Quick Inspiration
Ages 5–18, split into different studio groups so nobody’s stuck feeling too little or too cool. Younger kids focus on storytelling and confidence, while older teens get into proper filmmaking techniques, editing, cinematography and production skills.
Yep – real ones. Scripts, costumes, directing, filming, editing… the lot. Sparks students have even had films screened at festivals and won awards.
Not at all. It’s brilliant for shy kids, imaginative kids, dramatic kids, techy kids and kids who struggle with traditional classroom stuff. There’s loads of teamwork, confidence-building and creative problem solving hidden underneath all the fun.
Think filmmaking bootcamp – but fun. Kids spend the holidays creating themed productions from scratch, learning how films are made from “big idea” to final edit. Summer 2026’s theme is all about cinematic transformations and larger-than-life storytelling.
They do. Cameras, sound gear, editing software, lighting – it’s not just waving an iPhone around and hoping for the best.
Honestly? Perfect. Sparks teaches the stuff behind the stuff – storytelling, editing, framing, pacing and creativity. The sort of skills that work whether your child wants to make films, YouTube videos, documentaries or TikToks that don’t look like they were filmed during an earthquake.
Mostly yes – so it’s an excellent rainy-day activity and ideal for kids who need something creative that doesn’t involve mud, shin pads or standing on a freezing touchline at 8am.
Almost certainly. Film crews have to collaborate, solve problems together and occasionally argue about who gets to shout “Action!” first. It’s surprisingly social and a really lovely confidence-builder.
Often there are screenings, showcases or opportunities for families to see the finished work – and trust us, kids become VERY invested in seeing their names in the credits.
