About the Prince Charles Cinema

Tucked behind Leicester Square, the Prince Charles Cinema is what happens when a local indie screen gets its Hogwarts letter. Expect cheeky film choices, legendary singalongs, surprise marathons, and some of the best retro screenings in town – all with a proper sense of humour.

It’s a brilliant spot for families who actually love films – and even better for introducing your kids to the big-screen joy of classics like The Lion King, Up or The Goonies. They also run dedicated children’s events and “My First Cinema” screenings, so even mini movie buffs can get in on the fun.

Older kids will be all over the cult classics, Pixar throwbacks and musical mayhem. Grandparents? They’ll enjoy reliving their favourites – and might even join in a singalong or two. (Just maybe skip Rocky Horror unless Granny’s really cool.)

It’s not fancy, and accessibility is limited (stairs only), but it’s got soul by the bucketload. And a proper popcorn machine.

Top tip from the KidRated Team:

Planning to sit through a marathon or double bill? Bring snacks, squishy cushions and your best themed outfit – especially if it’s a singalong. You will regret being the only one not in sparkles or wizard robes.

Is it good for kids?

Yes – especially ones who love movies, music or any excuse to shout “Let it Go” in public. The Prince Charles has loads of kid-friendly screenings, especially at weekends and holidays. Just duble-check the film’s rating and vibe – not every show is suitable for littler ones.

Can I bring a baby?

You can, but only to U, PG or 12A-rated films. Babies must sit on your lap (no separate seats) and aren’t allowed in 15s or 18s. We suggest aisle seats in case you need a quick ninja escape for milk or meltdown.

Can teens go to marathons on their own?

If they’re 16 or 17, yes – but only to PG, 12A or 15-rated marathons. Under 16s aren’t allowed to attend marathons even if the film’s age-appropriate. And remind them to bring ID – just in case their youthful glow gets them carded.

Is it good for grandparents?

Definitely – if they’re fit enough for stairs and love a good film. It’s perfect for revisiting classics and sharing favourites with the grandkids. Just check the screening,  some cult events get a bit rowdy (and we mean that in the best way).

What’s close by to visit?

You’re in cinema central. Leicester Square is around the corner, Chinatown is great for dumplings post-movie, and Trafalgar Square or Covent Garden are both short walks away if you want to make a day of it.

Is it expensive?

Not at all, especially for central London. Tickets are way cheaper than the big chains, and membership deals get you even more savings. Perfect if you plan to come back for more singalongs or movie nights.

If we only do one event – what should it be?

A Sing-a-Long-a night. Whether it’s Encanto, Frozen, or The Sound of Music, these are high-energy, feel-good chaos in the best possible way. Costumes, props, shouting – the lot.

Is there a good place for a selfie?

Oh yes. Snap a pic under their iconic letterboard sign or inside next to a movie poster. If you’re in costume, even better – you’ll be among fellow fans doing the same.

Is it buggy/wheelchair friendly?

Sadly, no. The cinema is upstairs and there’s no lift, so accessibility is limited. If mobility’s an issue, give them a call – they’re super helpful, but space is tight.

Are there places to eat nearby (or inside)?

You won’t get hot meals inside (just snacks and drinks), but you’re surrounded by food. Chinatown, Soho, and Covent Garden are bursting with family-friendly options. Or smuggle in your own snacks – just be discreet about the rustling!
