Black Friday: A Blessing or a Curse?

Monty's Winter Garden at John Lewis Christmas 2014 black Friday

Here at KidRated we have been enjoying picking up some fantastic bargains in the January sales. But John Lewis’s managing director, Andy Street, is still thinking about Black Friday. The single day sale which follows the American holiday Thanksgiving, helped John Lewis to have its most profitable week on record ever. Electrical items were the best sellers on the day.

Andy Street, who is not adverse to a controversial comment, claiming that France was ‘finished’ back in October, is now making headlines by speaking out against Black Friday. While John Lewis handled Black Friday well, Street questioned whether smaller companies could handle such pressure of competitive pricing for the day, particularly in the run up to Christmas.

He hoped that 2014 was just a high watermark for Black Friday sales in Britain and although he doesn’t believe that the sale can go away completely, that next year it is not quite so crazy. Ugly scenes of people fighting over electrical appliances were seen at Brent Cross and other shopping establishments across the UK.

Big department store chains such as Debenham’s and Marks and Spencer struggled with the excessive demand, especially from online sales.

What did you think about Black Friday? Did you take advantage of the great offers?
