Villagers in Sonning, a small Thameside village, have promised George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin Clooney a “friendly welcome”, following reports the newlyweds have bought a home in the area.

Traditionally, newcomers to the English countryside are treated with suspicion and disdain, however, the residents of the Berkshire town already appear giddy at the thought of a Hollywood actor in their midst, with many of them discussing their thoughts to anyone with a press card or a camera.

Reverend Jamie Taylor, the vicar of Sonning, said he had been inundated with calls from US news outlets.

“From what we’ve heard they’re here, or have been… there’s a lot of excitement. There are a few well known people in the area and their privacy is respected”, he said (possibly meaning magician Paul Daniels, his wife Debbie McGee and spoon-bender Uri Geller).

“I hope it would be the same for them”, he added – blissfully unaware of the irony in his discussing their lives with journalists and the media.

“If they want to get involved in village life then they’ll find a friendly welcome,” he finished, hopefully.

It is not known whether George and Amal intend to participate in jumble sales or the local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

However, they are understood to have bought a £10million Grade II-listed mansion on the River Thames, which has its own library, gym, spa and steam room, along with a cellar and a boathouse and separate cottage for guests or staff.
