The Mitts Are Off

Published: 6th November 2014

John Lewis's christmas 2014 advert, Monty the Penguin

Battle lines have been drawn in this year’s Christmas TV-ad war as retailers go head-to-head in their efforts to secure your hard-earned cash.

Following the phenomenal success of their Lily Allen-fronted ‘The Bear & The Hare‘ advert from 2013, John Lewis have been the first to show their hand in 2014, with ‘Monty the Penguin‘ (get ready for some serious feels when you watch it). This time around, the sound track comes from Tom Odella singing ‘Real Love’ (by John Lennon) as they tell the story of a boy and his lonely Penguin friend, featuring the strapline ‘Give someone the Christmas they’ve been dreaming of.’

The John Lewis ad comes ahead of the offerings from Marks and Spencer, Debenhams and Waitrose whose own ads will air this weekend. Asda’s campaign will launch tonight, with Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s not far behind.

John Lewis have a long track record of making hugely successful Christmas marketing campaigns, and based on initial reactions, this year is set to be no different.

With 48 days to go until the big day, you’ll have a lot of time and a lot more adverts to watch before you pick your 2014 favourite.
