London Teens get Shakespeare for FREE

Published: 26th February 2015

The Globe Theatre which sits on the banks of the River Thames and is a replica of the theatre which Shakespeare himself would have performed and written plays for has always been a great place to watch theatre for cheap. If you’re prepared to stand for a few hours, it only costs £5. However this year, they are doing something even more special.

All state secondary schools in London have been offered free tickets for a special performance of Othello. These performances start today and continue until the 12th March.

The production has been specifically tailored to appeal to young audiences. It is shorter than your average Shakespeare production and is set in World War One. The actors are young, which makes sense for characters like the youthful Desdemona but Othello was supposed to have ‘declin’d into the vale of years.’

Although Othello is over 400 years old, it does still very much appeal to a modern audience. Themes of race, jealousy and being led astray by people we see as friends are just as pertinent for young people today. Though Othello does go a bit too far in Act 5.

Quite frankly, anyone who isn’t at a London secondary school should feel a little like the green eyed monster about missing this fantastic opportunity.

Tours of the Globe Theatre are available using the London Pass. The theatre’s 2015 season starts at the end of April.
